How to Create a Layered Mirror Gallery Wall
Hey, lovely people! 🌸✨
Are you tired of those blank, boring walls staring back at you every day? Trust me, I’ve been there.
To catch you up, I asked whether I should put a mirror or a gallery wall in my hallway. Many of you voted for a mirror but it got me thinking… What if we did BOTH? I really wanted to replicate the beauty from the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles, so, I came up with this :)
We are putting a twist on the classic gallery wall and adding in LAYERS. It’s chic, it’s stylish, and it’s totally doable. So, grab your coffee, put on your favorite playlist, and let’s dive into this fun project together!

What’s a Layered Gallery Wall, Anyway?
Imagine a wall that’s not just a flat collage of pictures or mirrors but a dynamic, three-dimensional masterpiece. A layered gallery wall mixes different frames, art, and in our case mirrors, to create a rich, textured look. Giving your wall a personality makeover! :)
Step 1: Gather Your Goodies 🎨
First things first, you need to collect all the items you want to display. Here’s a little checklist to get you started:
Mirrors: Mix different sizes, colors, and textures. Think outside the box! You can do this inexpensively by collecting from thrift stores and antique faires.
Objects: Small shelves, sconces, plants, or even quirky items like a vintage clock.
Supplies: 2″ x 2″ wooden blocks and nails
Pro tip: Don’t be afraid to mix old and new. The eclectic vibe is what makes a layered gallery wall so unique.
Step 2: Plan Your Layout 🗺️
Before you start hammering away, lay out your pieces on the wall using kraft paper/old newspaper. This way, you can move things around until you find the perfect arrangement. Here’s how to get that flawless layout:
Start with a centerpiece: Pick one big piece to anchor your wall. This will be the focal point.
Build around it: Add medium and small pieces around your centerpiece. Think of it like a puzzle.
Vary the spacing: Don’t be too uniform. Different gaps between pieces will add to the layered effect.
Feel free to snap a pic of your layout for reference later!
Step 3: Get to Hanging! 🔨
Time to bring your vision to life! I hired a Tasker from Taskrabbit for this project. Taskrabbit makes it easy to find skilled, reliable Taskers in your area who can help with a variety of household tasks like cleaning, yard work, home repairs, and errands. Nassim did an amazing job hanging my mirrors!

How to Hang The Frames in Layers
To create the layered effect for the framed mirrors, you need to create two layers. The first layer of frames is mounted the usual way right on the wall.
The next layer of frames will be mounted on wood blocks. To make these blocks, I used some scrap wood and cut it into blocks, each about 2″ x 2″.
NOTE: The blocks need to be as thick as your frames so when you place a frame on a block it lays above or level with the wall-mounted frames.
Place the Largest Mirrors First: Start by hanging the largest mirrors on the wall first and then work to each side. Next, place the second layer of mirrors on the blocks.
Attach Blocks to Wall: Drill a hole in the center of each block so you can screw the blocks onto the wall. The block becomes the wall for the frames that are going to be raised away from the wall to create the layered effect. I added a nail and hung a framed mirror on it.
Tips for Hanging the Mirrors on the Blocks:
When it comes to hanging overlapping frames to create the gallery wall, the trick lies with the placing of the blocks: The frames on blocks have to be centered on a block as this is where the hangers are on the back of each frame.
Line the top of the block up with the top center of the frame where the hanger is.
Note that some hangers on the back of frames are right on top, others are lower. Keep this in mind when placing the blocks on the wall. You should not see the block when the frame is hanging.
Create Two Layers or More: I only created two layers for my mirror gallery wall, but you could add a third level by using thicker blocks that will hold frames on top of ones already on thinner blocks.
Step 4: Add the Final Touches 🌿
Now that your gallery wall is up, it’s time to add those little extras that make it pop.
Lighting: A picture light or some fairy lights can add a magical touch.
Plants: A little greenery never hurt anybody. Small hanging plants or succulents on tiny shelves can breathe life into your wall.
Personal Touches: This is your space, so make it yours. Add anything that makes you smile :)
Voilà ! You’re a Gallery Wall Queen 👑
Take a step back and admire your handiwork (or your Tasker’s đź¤). You’ve just transformed your wall into a work of art that’s uniquely you. Snap a pic and share it with your friends (and don’t forget to tag me, because I’d love to see your creations!).

A layered gallery wall isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s a reflection of your personality and creativity. So, have fun with it and let your imagination run wild.
As always… what group project should we do next?
